Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.
不可征服
威廉·埃内斯特·亨利（1849 – 1903）

威廉·埃内斯特·亨利（Willaim Ernest Henley, 1849-1903）,
维多利亚时代的英国人,自幼体弱多病,患有肺结核症,一只脚被截肢,
为了保住另一只脚,终身与病魔搏斗,不甘屈服于命运.
“Invictus”是拉丁文（=unconquerable）,意为“不可征服”,
此诗是诗人在病榻上所作.
