拗九粥的来源,民间传说不一.一说是来源于“目连救母”的传说.据传,古时候有一个叫目连的人,其母生前悍恶,死后被关在阴间牢房里,他探监时,经常送食物给母亲吃,但均被看守的狱卒小鬼给吃掉了.后来,他想了一个办法,用荸荠、花生、红枣、桂圆、 红糖等原料与糯米混合,煮成甜粥,盛上碗后,再洒一把黑芝麻送去给母亲,看守狱卒见这稀饭黑乎乎的,问道：这是什么?目连随口答道∶“这是拗垢”.(福州话“九”与“垢”谐音)看守信以为真,认为这粥很脏,不敢吃.因此“拗九粥”才得以送到目连母亲的手中.这天正好是正月廿九,目连的母亲这年也正好二十九岁,闽俗中,正月分“三九”,正月初九称为“上九”,十九称为“中九”,廿九称为 “后九”,所以这粥便叫“后九粥” .以后又以粥的颜色拗黑,叫“拗九粥”,以目连孝顺母亲,又叫“孝九粥” .不管是正月廿十九,还是二十九岁,都是目连的母亲落难的年月,于是福州人逢九就犯忌,认为“九” 是厄难的岁月,所以,凡逢“九”岁数的人要吃太平面,出嫁的女儿,也要给父母送“九”,以求父母平安、健康.
