Animals Need Protecting Animals are natural resources that people have wasted all through our history.Animals have been killed for their fur and feathers, for food, for sport, and simply because they were in the way. Thousands of kinds of animals have disappeared from the earth forever. Hundreds more are on the danger list today. About 170 kinds in the United States aloneare considered in danger.
Why should people care? Because we need animals, and because once they are gone, there will never be any more.Animals are more than just beautiful or interesting. They are more than just a source of food. Every animal has its place in the balance of nature. Destroying one kind of animal can create many problems. For example, when farmers killed large numbers of hawks, the farmers' stores of corn and grain were destroyed by rats and mice. Why? Because hawks eat rats and mice, with no hawks to keep down their numbers, the rats and mice multiplied quickly.
Luckily, some people are working to help save the animals. Some groups raise money to let people know about the problem. And they try to get the governments to pass laws protecting animals in danger. Quite a few countries have passed laws. These laws forbid the killing of any animal or planton the danger list. Slowly, the number of some animals in danger is growing.

Indonesia hit by deadly tsunami, volcanic eruption
A powerful earthquake has triggered a three-meter tsunami, that pounded remote island villages in western Indonesia, killing at least 113 people and leaving 500 more missing. But... the catastrophy did not come alone. On Tuesday, Indonesia's most active volcano ALSO erupted, killing 18.
The tsunami triggered by the 7.2 magnitude earthquake on Monday swept away hundreds of homes on the Mentawai islands of West Sumatra, killing at least 113 villagers. Up to 500 others are missing.
Maman, Official Indonesian Disaster Agency, said, "A 7.2 Richter scale earthquake occurred Monday October 25th at 9.42 PM. The location was in Mentawai islands, West Sumatra, the depth of the epicenter is 10 kilometers. The villagers fleeing their homes are taking shelter in the mountains."
Indonesia's Mount Merapi volcano erupted on Tuesday, after scientists warned that pressure building beneath its dome could trigger the most powerful explosion in years.
18 people have been killed and up to 20 injured. Survivors have been rescued and taken to hospital.
Dr. Adi Mulyo, Panti Nugroho Hospital, said, "There are 18 injured people being treated in this hospital. All of them have severe burns, some with 40 to 90 percent burns."
The eruption of the volcano forced thousands of villagers to stream off the high mountains, crowding into makeshift emergency shelters with straw sleeping mats and bags of clothes and food.

Earlier, many had refused to budge, saying they wanted to tend to crops along the volcano's fertile slopes and protect their homes against looters.
Authorities have been trying to evacuate more than 11,000 villagers, after the alert status was raised to the highest level.
Indonesia, the world's largest archipelago, is prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity due to its location on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire. There is a series of fault lines stretching from the western hemisphere through Japan and Southeast Asia.
  地震作文:What is earthquake?
An earthquake is the result of a sudden release of energy in the Earth's crust that creates seismic waves(地震波). Earthquakes are recorded with a seismometer(地震检波器), also known as a seismograph(地震仪). The moment magnitude of an earthquake is conventionally reported, or the related and mostly obsolete Richter magnitude(里氏量级), with magnitude 3 or lower earthquakes being mostly imperceptible 感觉不到的 and magnitude 7 causing serious damage over large areas. Intensity of shaking is measured on the modified Mercalli scale(麦加利震级, 麦氏震级).
At the Earth's surface, earthquakes manifest themselves by a shaking and sometimes displacement (位移)of the ground. When a large earthquake epicenter (震中)is located offshore, the seabed sometimes suffers sufficient displacement to cause a tsunami(海啸). The shaking in earthquakes can also trigger landslides and occasionally volcanic activity.
In its most generic sense, the word earthquake is used to describe any seismic event—whether a natural phenomenon or an event caused by humans—that generates seismic waves. Earthquakes are caused mostly by rupture(破裂, 裂开) of geological faults(断层), but also by volcanic activity, landslides, mine blasts, and nuclear experiments.
An earthquake's point of initial rupture is called its focus or hypocenter. The term epicenter means the point at ground level directly above this.
  关于火山的英语作文
Why does Tazieff risk his life like this?
Haroun Tazieff, the Polish scientist, has spent his lifetime studying active volcanoes and deep caves in all parts of the world. In 1948, he went to Lake Kivu in the Congo to observe a new volcano which he later named Kituro. Tazieff was able to set up his camp very close to the volcano while it was erupting violently. Though he managed to take a number of brilliant photographs, he could not stay near the volcano for very long. He noticed that a river of liquid rock was coming towards him. It threatened to surround him completely, but Tazieff managed to escape just in time. He waited until the volcano became quiet and he was able to return two days later. This time, he managed to climb into the mouth of Kituro so that he could take photographs and measure temperatures. Tazieff has often risked his life in this way. He has been able to tell us more about active volcanoes than any man alive.
